In School’s First Day of School, the story is told from the unusual perspective of a brand-new school building (Frederick Douglass Elementary), who is excited yet anxious for its first day with students. As students arrive by bus and enter its halls, the school worries whether the kids will like it and whether it will like them in return. The day unfolds with typical school events—learning shapes, sitting on rugs, a fire drill, lunch in the cafeteria, new friends, messes, laughter and tears. The school endures embarrassing moments (like a fire alarm going off, or getting splashed with milk) but begins to see its purpose and value as it connects with the children. By the end of the day, the school realizes it is proud to be “a school” and looks forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow.
