The Fisherman and His Wife tells the story of a poor fisherman who catches a magical fish that can grant wishes. At his wife’s request, he repeatedly asks the fish for greater wealth and power — from a small cottage to a castle, then to becoming king, emperor, and even pope. Each time their home grows more grand, but the wife becomes greedier and more dissatisfied. Finally, when she demands to become equal to God, the magic fish takes everything away, and the couple returns to their simple hut by the sea. The tale warns about greed and the dangers of never being content.
